AOL has relinquished control of Netscape/Mozilla

As of today AOL has totally seperated itself from Mozilla. Mozilla is now a part of the non-profit organization, the Mozilla Foundation

What is the Mozilla Foundation?

The Mozilla Foundation is a new, non-profit org that will serve as the home for the coordination, development, and testing of Mozilla-based browsers and applications.

AOL has pledged $2M up front. Other corporations will invest their money in the organizations as they wish to.

AOL, Sun Microsystems, Red Hat, and other companies will continue to support Mozilla through the Foundation.

and:

Chances are you’ve heard this already, but Netscape is no more. MozillaZine are reporting that AOL has cut or will cut the remaining team working on Mozilla in a mass firing and are dismantling what was left of Netscape (they’ve even pulled the logos off the buildings). Today is a truly sad day.

I guess this is a Good Thing™? :)
