I’ve been looking around for a decent feedreader for Windows that doesn’t rely on .NET so that I can use it at work to keep up on a few feeds. I’ve not really found one that even comes close to the news reader I use at home, NetNewsWire
So I used “FeedReader” for a while but its got some issues still. I even played around with a few web enabled aggregators, but it just doesn’t seem right for some reason.
Well today I came across a cool newsreader written in python and Tkinter? Anyways its barebones, does just what I need and does get all up in my business. What’s even cooler is that you can write provider scripts that the application can load and process as RSS files. What that basically allows me to do is to read a site that doesn’t have a feed like a feed. What’s even better is that you get to write the modules in Python. Not sure what the hell I’m talking about?
Inspired by Ben Hammersley’s Fedex to RSS cgi script, I wrote a module for Effnews to parse out your fedex tracking information and provide it to Effnews like a RSS feed! Obviously not a univseral solution like Ben’s but I could easily add a few more lines of code and it’d be every bit as versitile at Ben’s :)
The only caveat to this “module” is that you must edit one line in the source file to contain your proper tracking ID.
